Labrador Puppy Kills Baby?

We recently received a comment from a blog reader who uttered the now immortal line "well, you never hear about Labradrors killing people, do you?"

Whilst it's undeniably the case that the larger, more powerful a dog happens to be, the greater the chance of serious injury *IF* there is an attack, to suggest that certain breeds are 'safe' and others are 'dangerous' is simply not true.

We cast out minds back to this story, covered by K9 Magazine in 2008:

Labrador Puppy Kills Baby

Police are investigating the tragic death of a 2-month-old, killed by a young Labrador dog in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The youngster was left unattended in a swing when the incident occurred. He died at the scene.

The boy, who has not been named, was at home with his mother and grandmother but they were not believed to be present in the room when the attack happened.

D’Ann Berson, operations manager for the Tulsa Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said an attack on a young child by a Lab would be an “unusual incident.”

“Labs as a rule are good family dogs,” she said. “They’re not bred to be attack dogs.”

Some dogs become aggressive around food or toys, Berson said. But an attack would be more common with a toddler, rather than an infant sitting in a swing, she said.

Two of the family’s dogs were taken to local animal shelter but only the Labrador was euthanised, at the request of the Tulsa Police.

Police will forward the report to the district attorney to decide whether criminal charges should be pressed.

Remember folks, castigating dog breeds and attempting to place the blame for all dog attacks at the feet of certain 'types' of dogs is dangerous ground. Ownership responsibility is the best way to avoid dog attacks – - particularly in relation to unattended children and dogs.
